Recently, we embarked on in-depth research to optimize blow tank designs for the reliable <a href=\"https:\/\/www.rieco.com\/solutions\/pneumatic-coveying\/dense-phase-pneumatic-conveying-system\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">dense-phase conveying<\/a> of <strong>ash<\/strong>, particularly for economizer hoppers and the 2<sup>nd<\/sup> &amp; 3<sup>rd<\/sup> fields of the ESP (Electrostatic Precipitator).<\/p>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n<p>Our goal was to ensure efficient and consistent ash feed into the pressure conveying pipeline, which requires blow tanks specifically designed for varying ash characteristics across different collection points.<\/p>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">The Challenge<\/h2>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n<p>Traditional blow tanks were designed for handling ash from <a href=\"https:\/\/www.rieco.com\/solutions\/air-pollution-control\/electrostatic-precipitator\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">ESP (Electrostatic Precipitator)<\/a> first fields, which have high ash collection rates. However, for the finer ash collected in ESP second and third fields, as well as from air preheaters and economizers, standard blow tanks proved unnecessarily large and inefficient. The challenge was to optimize tank size and weight to handle lower ash discharge rates effectively, while ensuring reliable dense-phase conveying with minimal air consumption.<\/p>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Methodology and Development<\/h2>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n<p>Our multi-phase approach involved several critical steps:<\/p>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\r\n  <li><strong>Ash Characterization<\/strong>: We collected samples from economizers, ESP fields, and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.rieco.com\/solutions\/air-pollution-control\/bag-filter-dust-collector\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">bag filters<\/a>, assessing key properties like bulk density, particle size distribution, and angle of repose. These measurements provided valuable data for tailoring the blow tank design.<\/li>\r\n  <li><strong>CFD Simulations<\/strong>: Using computational fluid dynamics (CFD), we simulated multiple blow tank designs to evaluate flow characteristics and minimize wear on internal surfaces.<\/li>\r\n  <li><strong>Flow Visualization<\/strong>: Transparent conduits allowed us to visualize the flow behavior of ash under various conditions, confirming simulation data and helping fine-tune the design.<\/li>\r\n  <li><strong>Validation &amp; Testing<\/strong>: Three blow tank prototypes were fabricated based on the simulations and tested under real conditions to ensure effectiveness across ash variations.<\/li>\r\n<\/ul>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n<p>The following table shows the physical properties of ash samples.<\/p>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n<figure class=\"wp-block-table\">\r\n  <table>\r\n    <thead>\r\n      <tr>\r\n        <th>S.
