It is essential to equip a plant with the best safeguards and to understand the industrial terminology and classifications used for fire and explosion hazards.<\/p>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n<p>There are zone classifications to determine how likely an explosive atmosphere is to occur in a given area, depending on the materials present:<\/p>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\r\n  <li><strong>Zone 0<\/strong> \u2013 An explosive atmosphere is present continuously or for long periods.<\/li>\r\n  <li><strong>Zone 1<\/strong> \u2013 An explosive atmosphere is likely to occur occasionally during normal operation (e.g., during maintenance or venting).<\/li>\r\n  <li><strong>Zone 2<\/strong> \u2013 An explosive atmosphere is not likely to occur in normal operation; if it does, it will persist only for a short period.<\/li>\r\n<\/ul>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Dust Explosion Zones<\/h2>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n<p>For combustible dusts, areas are classified as Zones 20, 21, and 22:<\/p>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\r\n  <li><strong>Zone 20<\/strong> \u2013 A combustible dust cloud is present continuously, for long periods, or frequently.<\/li>\r\n  <li><strong>Zone 21<\/strong> \u2013 A combustible dust cloud is likely to occur occasionally in normal operation.<\/li>\r\n  <li><strong>Zone 22<\/strong> \u2013 A combustible dust cloud is not likely to occur in normal operation; if it does, it will persist only for a short period.<\/li>\r\n<\/ul>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n<p>Dust explosions can occur due to static charge between particles or when a high concentration of dust in the air ignites in the presence of sufficient oxygen and an ignition source. The heat transfer generates a chain reaction, which can escalate into a large-scale explosion.<\/p>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n<p>Here is how combustible dusts are classified by severity:<\/p>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n<p>Combustible dusts are classified into four categories: St0, St1, St2, and St3. St0 is the lowest (no propagating explosion) and St3 is the highest severity.<\/p>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n<figure class=\"wp-block-table\">\r\n  <table>\r\n    <thead>\r\n      <tr>\r\n        <th>Classification*<\/th>\r\n        <th>K<sub>ST<\/sub> value (bar&middot;m\/s)**<\/th>\r\n      <\/tr>\r\n    <\/thead>\r\n    <tbody>\r\n      <tr>\r\n        <td>St0<\/td>\r\n        <td>0<\/td>\r\n      <\/tr>\r\n      <tr>\r\n        <td>St1<\/td>\r\n        <td>1\u2013200<\/td>\r\n      <\/tr>\r\n      <tr>\r\n        <td>St2<\/td>\r\n        <td>201\u2013300<\/td>\r\n      <\/tr>\r\n      <tr>\r\n        <td>St3<\/td>\r\n        <td>&ge;301<\/td>\r\n      <\/tr>\r\n    <\/tbody>\r\n  <\/table>\r\n<\/figure>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n<p>* \u201cSt\u201d stands for the German word \u201cStaub\u201d which means \u201cdust\u201d.<\/p>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n<p>** K<sub>ST<\/sub>, the deflagration index of a dust, is a generalized number used to estimate the anticipated behavior of a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.rieco.com\/products\/explosion-protection\/explosion-protection-devices.php\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">dust explosion<\/a>. A higher K<sub>ST<\/sub> value indicates higher explosion severity.<\/p>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image\">\r\n  <img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.rieco.com\/images\/blog-inside\/blog16\/blog-4.jpg\" alt=\"Illustration of industrial explosion protection with vents and rupture discs\" \/>\r\n<\/figure>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n<p>Apart from K<sub>ST<\/sub>, there is also a value called P<sub>max<\/sub> (Maximum Explosion Overpressure), which indicates how much overpressure a particular dust concentration can develop in a closed vessel. The difference is that K<sub>ST<\/sub> also considers the vessel size (via the V<sup>1\/3<\/sup> factor), while P<sub>max<\/sub> is the peak pressure attained.<\/p>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n<p>When an explosion starts, fuel is initially abundant, combustion accelerates, and vessel pressure rises rapidly. Eventually the maximum rate of pressure rise is reached; as the fuel is consumed, the rate decreases. Relief vents or rupture discs must be sized to the expected explosion severity\u2014the higher the maximum rate of pressure rise, the more severe the explosion.<\/p>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">How K<sub>ST<\/sub> Is Calculated<\/h2>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n<p>K<sub>ST<\/sub> = (dP\/dt)<sub>max<\/sub> &times; V<sup>1\/3<\/sup> &nbsp; (units: bar&middot;m\/s)<\/p>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n<p>From this, one can determine the required size of explosion vents or rupture discs needed to keep equipment and systems safe.<\/p>\r\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Every business and place of work relies on safety.
